Puerto Montt – Chile
Below you will find one of our most successful cycling itineraries in the Chilean lake district. We look forward to meeting you soon!
Cycling in the Los Lagos region of Chile:
Day 1
Transfer from the airport to Puerto Montt, afternoon to explore Puerto Montt and its surroundings.
Day 2
After getting ready with our rental bikes, we will travel to Puerto Varas where we will begin cycling along the shore of Lake Llanquihue. Lake Llanquihue is the largest lake in Chile and the second largest in Latin America. It seems as if all the volcanoes in the world live here, reflecting their perfectly snow-covered images in the imposing lake. Heading towards the Osorno Volcano, once we are at the foot of the volcano, we will hike along a trail to the Osorno Volcano mountain refuge where we will stop for lunch. Then we will walk along the surface of the lava and the snow fields of the volcano, from where you can get impressive views of Lake Llanquihue. Accommodation at the mountain refuge. (45-65 kms.)
Day 3
After our breakfast at the refuge we will continue our cycle towards the Reloncaví Fjord, along the Petrohué River with the ocean in the distance. From this sea view, if we are lucky, we may even see some dolphins at play and other marine life. We will end our day at the Ralún hot springs, where we let the natural wonders of the waters relax our muscles. Accommodation on the shores of Lake Llanquihue. (45 kms)
Day 4
Back on our bikes, we will head along Lake Llanquihue towards Las Cascadas, a small town in front of a black sand beach. A 3Km hike will take us to the waterfalls. After our hike we continue to Puerto Octay passing through dairy country with many small farms and small tiled churches. Overnight in Puerto Octay.
Day 5
Today our journey will take us along the shore to Frutillar, one of Chile’s most alluring and popular tourist resorts. German settlers have left their lasting mark on towns and villages in southern Chile, but especially on Frutillar. We continue our cycle to Llanquihue where we will transfer to Puerto Montt. (60 kms)
Day 6
Early in the morning we head to Chiloé Island. Chiloé offers a pastoral landscape of misty green fields and quaint fishing villages. Also known as the Enchanted Island, Chiloé’s uniqueness led to the belief in witches, fairies and other mythological figures that are an essential part of the island’s culture. We will drive along the shore, admiring the distinctive wavy tile houses with corrugated metal roofs that line the streets of Chiloé’s towns and the numerous typical Chiloé churches. There are more than 200 churches on the island, many of them dating back to the 18th century. Our final destination will be Castro, the capital and largest city on the island, characterized by its «palafitos», houses built on stilts and by its colorful cathedral declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 7
We head from Castro to Dalcahue to take the ferry crossing to Quinchao Island, visiting many fishing villages, from here we take our way back to Ancud enjoying the hospitality of the locals and perfect landscapes.
Day 8
Early morning transfer to Puerto Montt, say goodbye to our rental bikes and head to the airport. Net rate per person in a double room USD 1,750.-
